Thanksgiving Thoughts

Thanksgiving Thoughts

My dear friends tease me about how I say “MY husband “I guess because I always change my tone and could refer to him as Alex but after 28 years it never gets old.  I must admit I truly do adore him. Well, most of the time. Since it is Thanksgiving week and it’s the time when family and friends gather and give thanks and express gratitude, I want to express my gratitude for Alex, my best friend, the father to our children and the person I am most thankful for today.

He wakes everyday around 5:30 AM like clockwork and goes through the same routine, before heading off to work. I know this may seem trivial to some however, I noticed the other day how conscientious he is of me, like every morning... as I am still sleeping. He opens and closes the bathroom door ever so quietly and doesn’t turn on the lights when it clearly dark in the room. He even purchased a small flashlight for his dresser and uses it every morning to find his socks and boxers. I mean, he truly is trying not to disturb me so sleeping beauty can catch a few more minutes of sleep.

His morning routine includes household tasks, that I might add he has acquired over the years as it wasn’t always this way, however I will say it’s been a steady thing for the last 10 years. He makes the coffee, does any left-over dishes in the sink, lets the dog out and when it’s chilly like today he makes a fire in the fireplace. My husband likes to sit on the couch in our front living room where he quietly enjoys his coffee, along with some reading material as he says his prayers. It’s so endearing because I know he prays every single day for our family.

If I arise early enough, I see him sitting there on our couch enjoying the peace and quiet of the morning. I must say he is a morning person and typically in a great mood. So, I am greeted with a smile and a good morning darlin. On the other hand, If I am still sleeping through his morning routine, he will come upstairs shave, shower, and the entire time be extremely quiet and respectful.  Once he’s finished up his routine before he leaves our room and if I have raised my head through the pillows, I’ll say goodbye…I love you and have a good day, typically he will come over to the side of the bed and gently kiss me. It’s so endearing, and this is been an everyday occurrence for most of my marriage with him.

And so, it dawned on me that he’s been proceeding with the same routine for the last 28 years of marriage that we’ve been together, and it made me feel so happy and grateful.  I mention this because it’s not as if I wasn’t grateful before it’s just that with all that life has an unfolded before me within the last couple of months, I think I’ve realized a sense of peace that I didn’t have before. These are all simple things that hopefully many of our spouse’s exhibit. I wanted to write about him and to remind myself to never take for granted these little things that my husband does each and every day. So, this Thanksgiving, I am especially grateful for “my husband”.
